How does a boxing class compare to HIIT for fitness and stress relief?
After a long week, some people want to sweat it out and some want to hit something. Both are fair. When people ask us about boxing class vs HIIT, what they really want to know is which one will get them fitter and which one will leave them feeling calmer. The answer is that both do both, just in slightly different ways.
Boxing-based training and HIIT share a lot. Both use intervals of hard work and short rest, both get your heart rate up and both are done in a group with a coach. We run boxing in West Hampstead alongside our HIIT classes, so we see the difference in how people respond to each.
Boxing class vs HIIT for fitness
A boxing fitness class works your shoulders, arms, core and legs, because a good punch starts from the ground and comes through your hips. It builds stamina, coordination and speed. You're learning technique as you go, so there's a skill element that keeps your brain involved.
HIIT covers more of the body more evenly. Across our class types, you'll squat, lunge, press, pull, row, bike and jump. That makes it better for all-round conditioning and full-body strength, and our coached classes burn plenty of calories. HIIT Strength adds heavy compound lifts, which boxing doesn't really offer.
| Boxing class | HIIT class | |
|---|---|---|
| Main fitness benefit | Stamina, coordination and upper-body endurance | All-round conditioning and full-body strength |
| Muscles worked | Shoulders, arms, core and legs | Whole body, including lower-body strength |
| Calorie burn | High | High |
| Skill element | High, you learn punches and combinations | Low to moderate, movements are simple |
| Stress relief | Physical release plus total focus | Endorphins, group energy and a clear head |
| Impact on joints | Low impact for legs, some wrist and shoulder load | Scalable, with low-impact options |
| Best for | Letting off steam and learning a skill | Fitness, fat loss and variety |
Which is better for stress relief?
Any exercise helps with stress. The NHS notes that regular exercise can help improve mood, and most people walk out of either class feeling better than when they walked in.
Boxing has a particular quality, though:
- Hitting a bag is a very direct physical release.
- Remembering a combination takes all your attention.
- You can't think about your inbox while you're trying to land a jab-cross-hook.
For many people, that total focus is where the stress relief comes from.
HIIT relieves stress differently. The intensity crowds out everything else, the endorphins kick in and the group energy carries you along. We've written about this in the power of group motivation. If you're someone who finds structure calming, knowing exactly what's coming next in a HIIT class can help too.
Why not do both?
You don't have to choose. Boxing features among our HIIT class styles, alongside Energy, Strength, Circuits, TRX and Abs. Mixing HIIT classes with a boxing session gives you:
- Strength
- Conditioning
- Coordination
- A proper outlet for stress
If you're feeling nervous about trying either, our guide to overcoming gym anxiety might help. Every class is coached, and beginners are welcome.
How often should you train?
For fitness and stress relief, a few sessions a week works well for most people. A few tips:
- Leave a day between the hardest sessions so your shoulders and legs can recover.
- Use lighter days for walking or stretching.
- If stress is the main reason you're training, consistency matters more than intensity.
- A class you enjoy and attend every week will do more for your head than a brutal one you dread.

Enquire NowFAQ
Is boxing a good workout for beginners?
Yes. Coaches teach the basic punches and combinations from scratch, and you work at your own pace.
Does boxing burn more calories than HIIT?
Both burn a lot. The exact amount depends on your size, fitness and how hard you work.
Do I need my own boxing gloves?
Ask the team before your first class about gloves and wraps so you know what to bring.
Which is better for stress, boxing or HIIT?
Both help. Boxing gives you a direct physical release and total focus, while HIIT gives you endorphins and group energy.
Can I mix boxing and HIIT in the same week?
Yes. Mixing HIIT classes with a boxing session makes a well-balanced week for strength, conditioning and stress relief. Leave a rest day between the hardest sessions.
